Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe?
It’s a question dividing opinions across many fields, and family history research is no exception. This presentation tackles the debate head on, moving beyond the introductory overview from our previous session to examine the latest developments in AI tools and their realworld applications for genealogists.
Andrew Redfern explores both sides of the argument with practical examples drawn from current AI technology. The session also addresses the concerns that give many researchers pause, including the limitations of AI, the risk of over-reliance, and why sound research practice remains nonnegotiable regardless of the tools at your disposal.
Informed, balanced, and grounded in the realities of genealogy, this presentation will help you decide where AI fits — or doesn’t fit — in your own research journey.
Andrew is a current director of the Society of Australian Genealogists where he contributes significantly to its education and IT programs. He is particularly interested in how digital tools can be used to enhance our family history work, and combined with his professional background in educational technology, Andrew has become a leader in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into family history research. He has presented at RootsTech and to many family groups both in Australia and internationally.
